Campus Description: Stony Brook University, home to many highly ranked graduate research programs, is located 60 miles from New York City on Long Island's scenic North Shore. Our 1,040-acre campus is home to 24,600 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students and more than 13,500 faculty and staff, including those employed at Stony Brook Medicine, Suffolk County's only academic medical center and tertiary care provider. The University is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and co-manager of nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), a multidisciplinary research laboratory supporting world class scientific programs utilizing state-of-the-art facilities such as the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, the National Synchrotron Light Source, and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials, and the New York Blue IBM BG/L+P supercomputer, owned by Stony Brook and managed by BNL. Stony Brook is a partner in managing the Laboratory for the Department of Energy, and is the largest institutional scientific user of BNL facilities. As such, many opportunities exist for collaborative research, and in some cases, joint appointments can be arranged.

Required Qualifications: Must hold PhD by date of appointment. Must have training in the appropriate area of research. Must have experience with field based educational programs, including student recruitment, and evidence of curriculum development. We seek a professional who has an administrative background and ability to teach courses in area of expertise. Preferred Qualifications: Research interests that dovetail with those of current faculty in Anthropology, Anatomical Sciences, TBI, Ecology & Evolution, and Geosciences. Good History of External funding and publication. Promising plans for future research that will have a substantial emphasis on field research in the Turkana Basin of Kenya.

Responsibilities & Requirements: As part of a university wide initiative, the Turkana Basin Institute at Stony Brook University invites applications for a part time (0.6 FTE) research Assistant Professor faculty position to oversee TBI's field schools, to recruit students, and to develop new programs. The position will begin fall 2017. We seek an individual with Ph.D. whose focus on human evolution in Africa. We seek a candidate with a commitment to excellence in teaching, a strong record of working with students in field based educational programs, experience with curriculum development and research interests that can be pursued in the Turkana Basin. Through this position, we seek to expand enrollment in the TBI field schools and to increase synergistic relations with other departments on campus such as Ecology & Evolution, Engineering, Geosciences and Marine and Atmospheric Sciences with a view to developing new, field based academic programs. We seek to increase the number of universities both in the US and overseas with whom we develop MOU's to facilitate their students participation in TBI's field schools.

Special Notes: This is a non-tenure track position. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Anticipated Start Date: September 1, 2017.
