The Department of Anthropology at the State University of New York College at Oneonta invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Biological Anthropology (Paleoanthropology) beginning Fall 2021. The professional obligation is for a ten-month academic year. Expectations include, but are not limited to, teaching, research, student advisement, college service, and continuing professional development.

SUNY Oneonta is a public college in Central New York, enrolling about 6,500 students in bachelor’s, master’s and graduate certificate programs. Most of SUNY Oneonta’s main campus lies within the City of Oneonta, which is located in the northern foothills of the Catskill Mountains, about a four-hour drive from New York City, Boston and Philadelphia. With a population just shy of 14,000, the City of Oneonta is the largest municipality in a rural region dominated by agriculture and tourism.

The Department of Anthropology has six full-time faculty members and is distinguished by small classes, highly accessible faculty, and facilities that include research and teaching laboratories, a teaching gallery, and a paleoanthropology teaching collection. There are two tracks in the major: General Anthropology and Human Biology. The Department is part of the School of Sciences, which consists of 10 academic departments and 2,400 students majoring in 22 programs. Duties include but not limited to: teaching courses in areas such as introductory biological anthropology, paleoanthropology and another area of specialization, and other courses to meet department needs; involving students in research; advising and mentoring students; contributing to gallery exhibits and programs; and actively participating in departmental and university life.

Required qualifications: PhD in anthropology (ABD considered; doctorate required at time of first renewal notification); ability to teach courses listed in duties above; ability to initiate a suitable and productive research program.

Preferred: evidence of teaching effectiveness; experience teaching courses in the areas listed in duties; experience teaching other courses in anthropology; demonstrated experience involving students in research; evidence of the capability to provide effective advisement and mentoring to students; experience with curating exhibits and/or science communication; experience working with diverse populations and/or teaching pedagogies and/or multicultural teaching experience.
